Chapter 10

Introduction to Robotics

Fill in the blanks

1.      Robots are controlled by external control devices.

2.      Most robot use sensors, which help them, adapt their actions to the environment.

3.      Robots have a type of computer program that determine what, when, and how a robot can complete its task.

4.      Complex level robots can be programmed and reprogrammed easily.

5.      Robots interact with the physical world via sensors and actuators.

Write T for True and F for False.

1.      Simple level robots have complex model based circuits.                                F

2.      A laptop is an example of middle-level robot.                                                F

3.      Fixed robots are mostly used in industries with a well-defined work, environment, adapted for robots.                                                                                                              T

4.      Robots can never replace human workers.                                                      F

5.      Service robots have improved sensors and interact with human closely.       T

Match the following

1.      First industrial robot    -           Unimate

2.      Washing machine        -           Simple-level robot

3.      Mitra robot                  -           Launched by the PM Narendra Modi

4.      Robot-assisted surgery -         Service robots

Answer the following questions.

1.     Classify the three types of robots.

Depending upon the use and application, robots can be classified into three levels –

Simple level robots

Middle level robots

Complex level robots

2.     Give a difference between a fixed and mobile robot.

Fixed robots are mostly used in industries with a well-defined work environment adapted for robots.

Mobile robots move around and perform task in large, uncertain environment.

3.     What are service robots?

Service robots have improved sensors and interact with humans closely to assist them in tasks.

4.     Name any two India’s famous robots and write their specialty.

Manav – India’s first 3D-printed humanoid robot. It can perform push-ups and play football.

Daksh – It is an electrically powered and remotely controlled robot. It is used for locating and destroying harmful object safely.

IRA 2.0 – HDFC bank has a humanoid robot assist to answer the frequently asked questions (FAQ) by customers.

5.     What are artificially intelligent robots? Give an example.

The robots that show intelligent behavior after getting programmed are called artificially intelligent robots.

Example: Sofia robot
